A few weeks ago, we embarked on a vigorous exercise of restoring 2kms of upstream Isiolo River.A team of 6 armed with apparatus and deep silting passion for nature. Each spring ,every molecule of water discharge signified hope to wildlife and communities downstream.7 days of hardwork, sweat and a worth toil. We set up biodiversity barriers using two native plants namely:Dracaena haningtonii and Commiphora africana. They create a suitable, excellent live fence, that stops invasion of the critical wetland ecosytems.
Human activity in form of vegetation destruction ,pollution is a menace. While at it,we made friends through our intensive awareness creation about conservation among the local community; especially nomadic pastoralists. The particular river stretch is one continuous spring, a home to many birds, baboons ,bees etc. The sad bit that stains it all,is that there was rampant waste pollution by the banks of thr river from the neighboring market.Going forward, our team will collaborate with other stakeholders to remove the trash and cover the space with wetland vegetation that includes:native trees, reeds, canopies ,grasses etc..Be sure to catch more details of the 2nd exciting phase of our biodiversity restoration efforts!
